Alicia came to America from
Panama when she married an American military man. They had two children,
Melissa and Kathy. Her husband got them settled into a small trailer on the
front edge of his mother’s property and left them. She was able to make friends
who helped her with transportation to shopping and church every week. As a born
and raised Catholic in Panama, she found the Lord at a little country altar in Vancleave,
Mississippi.
Alicia and the children
existed like this for many years but her life was very limited, especially as a
legal alien with a very thick accent. Her friends encouraged her to become a
citizen and helped her with the application and with her studies.
Finally the day arrived. Alicia,
along with her “sisters” from church, drove to the Immigration and Naturalization
office in New Orleans. The room was packed with people desiring to swear their
allegiance to America. It was a very moving ceremony. Afterward, they all went
to lunch to celebrate.
When some Americans are
cursing our own country, those who know the fragrance of freedom love it,
respect it, and pursue it.
Alicia—welcome to America!
