AGLOW vs LUKEWARM

By Danna Shirley
I gave this message in 1996 at the Charismatic Service at the Hario Chapel, Japan.

Mt 24:12  “And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold.”
Lawlessness (458)--not having, knowing, or acknowledging the LAW...and what is the law?...the Ten Commandments. Simply the “Thou shalt and the Thou shalt not’s”... and the two that cover them all ... Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul, and love your neighbor as yourself. (Mt 22:37-40)

And today because of how distorted our “freedom” has become, we can’t even display the Ten Commandments publicly or speak of them, let alone teach them, to our school children. Those same school children who are growing up and turning to all kinds of “lawlessness”... Just pick up a newspaper or listen to the news and you’ll get a good idea of the meaning of “lawlessness.” Is it any wonder that the love of many will grow cold?

BUT, the Gospel is called the Good News for a reason. We don’t have to live in vs 12, praise God!

(vs 13)... “BUT he who endures to the end shall be saved.”
Endures (5278)--to hold one’s ground in conflict, bear up against adversity, hold out under stress, stand firm, persevere under pressure, wait calmly and courageously.  It is not passive resignation to fate and mere patience, but the active, energetic resistance to defeat that allows calm and brave endurance.
Saved (4982)--all the blessings inclusively of God on men in Christ! salvation, healing, deliverance, preservation
Endure to the end (Jn 17:11)--Jesus prayed for us “Holy Father, keep through Your name those whom You have given Me...” Are we to believe that God would not answer Jesus’ prayer...NO...so we are kept by the Holy Father and we SHALL endure to the end!!!

Now we come to another very important scripture.

Rev. 3:15-16… spoken to the church at Laodicea...“I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.
Lukewarm (5513)--tepid; (dictionary definition is lacking in passion, force, or zest; an absence of enthusiasm or conviction)

WOW!  Not very flattering, is it? I wouldn’t want to be described as tepid. God is speaking to Christians here, the “church” at Laodicea!

Rev 3:20  Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me."  This is a scripture often given to unbelievers BUT the truth is that these words were spoken by Jesus to the church...the lukewarm church

When God gave me this message, I had to ask this question of MYSELF first: Am I lukewarm, Lord?

Rev 3:15--Jesus said, “I know your works.” Well, I did have plenty of those! I taught a Bible study every Wednesday, taught Sunday School, organized Joy Fellowship, led praise and worship at church, and sometimes brought the message when a Chaplain wasn’t in port. I wasn’t giving quality time to any of them. I was overWORKed and as I examined all of this, I realized I had no peace about any of these works. To identify with a friend, I had lost my joy.  I only had time for my works and no time for that relationship with Jesus. So, in essence, I was lukewarm because I had no time to draw near to God. God showed me that HE hadn’t called me to all these works. Yes, we are to be zealous for good works (Titus 2:14) BUT only those works that HE calls us to do.

So after I looked at myself and my works, I moved on to the CHURCH. Is the church lukewarm today? There are God’s brushfires being lit all over the world. We’ve heard about the Toronto Blessing in Canada (Jan 1994) and the revival in Pensacola, Florida (June 1995). People are traveling to these places from all over the country and all over the world…for what? …a blessing, a word, healings, curiosity, a touch, miracles, skepticism

The Word says God shows no partiality (Acts 10:34-35) and whoever fears Him and works righteousness (practices God’s uprightness or standard) is accepted by Him.

We don’t have to travel to Toronto or Pensacola. We can have it right here. There is a price to be paid, however, Jesus paid the price. Do we want it bad enough? Are we satisfied to be lukewarm? Do we want to be vomited out of the Lord’s mouth?

What would it take to see revival here?  Prayer, Fasting, Confession of Sins (1 Jn 1:8-10), Repentance, Forgiveness, Desiring to see a move of God in our midst. What price are we willing to pay?

Then I looked at our NATION? Lukewarm? Well, I see that within our borders we have abortion as law and pornography as a protected form of free speech; we’ve taken prayer out of our schools and allowed the religion of evolution to be taught; we’ve got no-fault divorce that has sent almost two generations of children reeling from the breakdown of their family; and homosexuality, an abomination to God, is being popularized by the entertainment industry.

Have you heard it said that if God lets America off for her embrace of homosexuality, He’ll have to apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah? I want to make clear that God does not hate gays and neither should we. God wants to see them called out of darkness and into His marvelous light (1 Peter 2:9).

I see being lukewarm as a wink and a shrug toward those things God is calling us to be on fire and aglow about.

Romans 12:11 “not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord.”
Fervent (aglow) (2204)--to boil with heat, be hot.

2 Chronicles 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”

Are we lukewarm or do we want to be Burning Hot and Aglow in Spirit, serving the Lord?
“Behold, Jesus stands at the door and knocks...He desires to come in to you.”

WIDOW'S ROW

by Danna Shirley

It’s not a place where I wanted to be identified.  I would much rather still be seated with my peers in the “single women’s section” or maybe with the “youth” (aha, that was long ago).  I would love to be remembered as a “young married” or even a “middle married,” but alas, I have gravitated to Widow’s Row and I’m seated with Lavern and Juanita and Pat and Mildred.  We all had long marriages, at least thirty years or more; some went through long illnesses with their husbands, as well.  I, however, went through no time at all. My Ron was with me one night and gone the next morning. Now I sit on Widow’s Row with Lavern and Juanita and Pat and Mildred.

We meet for lunch sometimes because there is no one at home waiting for us anymore.  As families walk into the restaurant and are seated comfortably around us, we hear their laughter and see their happy faces; happy to be there together.  Yes, we sit and talk, we eat and comment on our delicious sweet potato casserole or how the coleslaw is too mayonnaise-y.  Mildred says her family raves about her vegetables and Juanita asks when we’re all invited over so she can prove it.  We reminisce of how we used to cook for our families but now it is so tiring to cook for just one—it’s no fun at all!  We get our doggie bags to take home our leftovers so we’ll have something to eat for dinner later that night.

Next Sunday arrives and we meet and greet each other again.  We sing and lift our voices on high in praise to God . . . and we sit on Widow’s Row.

WHAT DOES TRUST MEAN TO YOU?

by Danna Shirley
In 1996 I gave a teaching on this scripture at a youth retreat at Mt. Eboshi in Japan. We went through the following posters and had a group discussion on each:

"Trust in the LORD with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths." (Prov 3:5-6)

POSTER #1--TRUST
1.  What does TRUST mean to you?
2.  Who should you TRUST?
     a.  Ourselves? (we lie)
     b.  Our feelings? (they deceive us)
     c.  Our friends? (they fail us) Psalm 118:8
     d.  Our possessions or position? Proverbs 11:28 (they can change in a moment)

3.  Why should we trust in the Lord?
Joshua 1:9 "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go."

Psalm 37:5 "Commit your way to the LORD; trust in Him and He will do this."

Psalm 62:8 "Trust in Him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to Him, for God is our refuge."

Psalm 121 "I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lordthe Maker of heaven and earth.
He will not let your foot slip—He who watches over you will not slumber;
indeed, He who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
The Lord watches over you—the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night.
The Lord will keep you from all harm—He will watch over your life;
the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore."

Isaiah 26:3-4 “The steadfast of mind You will keep in perfect peace, because he trusts in You.
“Trust in the LORD forever, for in GOD the LORDwe have an everlasting Rock."

POSTER #2--HEART
The HEART is the seat of the will.
Matthew 7:21 "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father Who is in heaven."

John 5:30 "By Myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and My judgment is just, for I seek not to please Myself but Him who sent Me."

John 6:40 For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise Him up on the last day.”

Romans 12:2 "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--His good, pleasing, and perfect will."

Colossians 1:9 "For this reason also, since the day we heard of it, we have not ceased to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding."

4.  What happens when we're out of the Father's will?

POSTER #3--LEAN
5.  What do you think it means to "lean not on your own understanding?"

POSTER #4--WAYS
In whatever "way" we find ourselves:
...in the valley
...on the mountaintop
...in sickness
...in health
...in joy
...in sorrow

ACKNOWLEDGE
...see Him working
...to know by observation, investigation, reflection, firsthand experience
...intimacy with God in prayer

POSTER #5--DIRECT
6.  How do you meet the condition of God in directing your path?
Even if your path has become crooked, rocky, or thorny, God will straighten out the path of His devoted, trusting servants . . . if they acknowledge Him in ALL their ways.

"I will go before you and make the crooked places straight." (Isaiah 45:2)

POSTER #6--PATHS
“I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants, by loving the LORD your God, by obeying His voice, and by holding fast to Him; for this is your life and the length of your days, that you may live in the land which the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give them.” (Deut 30:19-20)

7.  What is the key word in Proverbs 3:5-6 to you?  and why?

ARE YOU WET WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT?

by Danna Shirley

Have you heard of “dry spells” in your Christian walk?  To me a “dry spell” is not the same as a “valley experience.”

A VALLEY EXPERIENCE is something in our “earthly” lives that we’re walking through. Maybe we’re praying and God doesn’t answer the way we wish He would. WE FEEL we’re in a valley! Or maybe our “valley” could be:
A lost job,
Getting something we DIDN’T want,
Not getting something we wanted,
Prolonged sadness over a hurt relationship,
The death of a loved one, etc.

It could go on and on and sometimes it does! I see it as relating to events in our lives. We can go through a crisis and still ride above it spiritually, that’s when we truly experience God’s “peace that passes all understanding.”  We know when we’re in our valley because we don’t seem to be approaching the summit yet!

A DRY SPELL, however, is your “spiritual” valley experience. Everything can be going great and we still can be in a DRY place spiritually. So I ask this question today—
ARE YOU DRY OR . . . ARE YOU WET WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT?

There are many symbols for the Holy Spirit in scripture:
Pretty showering animated waterfall over moss covered rocks in a lush forest scene“On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, ‘If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.  He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart [belly] will flow rivers of living water.’  But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.”  (John 7:37-39)

“but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.” ( John 4:14)

As believers, the Holy Spirit dwells in us and out of our hearts will flow “rivers of living water,” which is the Holy Spirit.

Jesus is speaking . . . “And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper [Comforter], that He may abide with you forever—the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.” (John 14:16-17)

Other scriptures concerning the indwelling of the Holy Spirit are Romans 8:9-11 and 2 Timothy 1:14.

Jesus is speaking . . . “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.  However, when He, the Spirit of Truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.” (John 16:12-13)

“Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.” (1 Cor 2:12-13)

Dick Iverson writes, “If we think of the Holy Spirit as an abstract or impersonal influence or power, we are robbing a Divine Person of the worship, love, and recognition due Him. The Spirit is as ‘living water’ or ‘life-producing’ water, which must be continually bubbling up or flowing, not as a stagnant marsh or reservoir in our lives.”

Visualize a stagnant marsh—blue-green algae, scum, flies and mosquitoes, ugh!  Now visualize a reservoir—beautiful, blue, clean, but going nowhere, not flowing into anything as we should be . . . flowing into each other’s lives, watering one another through the ministry of the Holy Spirit.

WATER cleanses and washes away dirt and impurities, it satisfies our thirst, it waters the ground producing food to sustain our lives, for without water we will die. Without the Holy Spirit we will also die—spiritually.

Why does the Holy Spirit desire to water us?  "But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness when we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life."  (Titus 3;4-7)

WASHING: to bathe, cleansing from sin.
REGENERATION: recovery, renovation, a new birth, to beget again.
RENEWING: a renovation that makes a person different than the past, renew qualitatively (quality).

We can always turn a deaf ear when the Holy Spirit begins to “wash” us. We can dam up our water supply! When we do that, though, we have quenched the Holy Spirit and put our foot on the path to a dry place. That’s where I found myself recently. I was a dry sponge in a dry place! I know because I recognize what it’s like to be wet and I wasn’t wet! I knew I was in trouble when I started down that path because I’ve been on it before and sometimes it can be pretty long and pretty dry!

This time, however, I began to pray every morning, “Lord, water me with Your Holy Spirit! TODAY!” Just one day at a time! Praise God He began but I also had to cooperate. I had to present myself to the Lord and to pray and surrender my heart of stone to receive a heart of flesh. (Ezek 36:26, Isaiah 44:3) Now we’ve seen by scripture that the Holy Spirit dwells in us (Jn 14:16-17) and then He flows out of us like rivers of living water (Jn 7:38). As a sponge, we can soak up all that He has OR we can go to a desert place and die—spiritually. John 15:4 says “ABIDE IN ME AND I IN YOU.”

Have you ever met a “dry” Christian? They are walking around breathing but they’re dying of thirst inside. The Spirit of the living God is not watering them or washing them or cleansing them or renewing them. It’s like they’ve dammed up their energy source. We probably ALL have found ourselves in a dry place at sometime or other. We may know the Word but do we enter into the wonderful blessings of the Holy Spirit’s watering and washing and teaching?

When we find ourselves in a dry place, satan lies to us and tells us we’re NOT DRY or he tries to point us to every other answer except returning to our FIRST LOVE, Jesus Christ and the washing of the Holy Spirit.
“Oh, you don’t need to get into the Word of God”...or...
“You’re so tired, you don’t need to go to church/Bible study today” ...or...
“You don’t need fellowship w/other believers” …etc...
and he will talk you into shutting yourself off from fellowship.

“For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him?  Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.  Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.” (1 Cor 2:11-12)

“And it shall come to pass afterward that I will pour out My Spirit on ALL flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions. And also on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days.” (Joel 2:28)

Jesus is speaking...“Behold, I send the Promise [of the Holy Spirit] of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.” (Luke 24:49)

“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you...” (Acts 1:8)

Do you feel that you have power? The teaching of and learning from the Holy Spirit is a day by day process. He desires to show us the deep things of God BUT we must take ourselves to “school” and learn! That means getting in the Word daily; surrendering to the Holy Spirit’s teaching.

A wonderful by-product of the Holy Spirit is the fruit that He produces in our lives: LOVE, JOY, PEACE, PATIENCE, KINDNESS, GOODNESS, FAITHFULNESS, GENTLENESS, and SELF-CONTROL!  If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.  (Gal. 5:22-25)

I’d like to ask you again,
ARE YOU DRY or ARE YOU WET?
ARE YOU HAPPY WHERE YOU ARE WITH GOD?
ARE YOU EXPERIENCING A PROGRESSIVE WALK WITH THE LORD?
DO YOU WANT TO BE WATERED, REJUVENATED, RENEWED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT?
DO YOU WANT TO GO INTO DEEPER WATER AND EXPERIENCE THE DEEP THINGS OF GOD?

Then ask of God and He will freely give you all things...

It All Depends on Whose Hands It’s In

—Paul Ciniraj (a missionary in India)
A basketball in my hands is worth about $19.
A basketball in Michael Jordan’s hands is worth about $33 million.
It depends on whose hands it’s in…
A baseball in my hands is worth about $6.
A baseball in Mark McGuire’s hands is worth $19 million.
It depends on whose hands it’s in…
A tennis racket is useless in my hands.
A tennis racket in Pete Sampras’ hands is a Wimbledon Championship.
It depends on whose hands it’s in…
A rod in my hands will keep away a wild animal.
A rod in Moses’ hands will part the mighty sea.
It depends on whose hands it’s in…
A sling shot in my hands is a kid’s toy.
A sling shot in David’s hand is a mighty weapon.
It depends on whose hands it’s in…
Two fish and 5 loaves of bread in my hands is a couple of fish sandwiches.
Two fish and 5 loaves of bread in God’s hands will feed thousands.
It depends on whose hands they’re in…
Nails in my hands might produce a birdhouse.
Nails in Christ Jesus’ hands will produce salvation for the entire world.
It depends on whose hands they’re in…
As you see now it depends whose hands it’s in.
So put your concerns, your worries, your fears, your hopes, your dreams, your families and your relationships in God’s Hands.
Because, it depends on whose hands they’re in.

THE MOST UNPOPULAR SUBJECT OF THE MODERN DAY CHRISTIAN

Danna Shirley

Can you imagine going to work every day and not receive enough pay to sufficiently feed, clothe, or house your family or pay your bills?
Can you imagine having brothers and sisters in your family that can help you in your hour of need and not receive a helping hand from them?
Can you imagine your brother and sister in need and not be sensitive enough to give a helping hand?
Can you imagine seeing yourself robbing God and then singing, dancing, and praising Him before the altar with clean hands and a pure heart?

“Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed Me . . . in tithes and offerings.” (Malachi 3:8)
When we, the Body of Christ, bring our tithes into the storehouse, we are doing three things:
1.      We are obeying God’s Word in Malachi,
2.      We are opening the windows of heaven to receive a blessing that there shall not be room enough for us to hold, and
3.      We are supporting our pastors financially, which frees them to minister back to us in our hour of need and to minister to others in our place for Jesus Christ.
“The laborer [teacher] is worthy [due praise, deserving] of his hire [wages] . . .” (Luke 10:7)
Now consider the first three questions above.
Our pastors must feed, clothe, house, and pay their bills, as well as the church’s expenses, out of our tithes and offerings.
Our pastors receive their “helping hand” through our tithes and offerings.
Our pastors are sensitive to our needs but are we sensitive to see that their needs are met through our tithes and offerings?
Our pastors are worthy of their hire!
You may have supposed that our pastors should be standing on the Word of God in Philippians 4:19 and by faith believe God to supply all of their needs. The Word says that God does supply all of our needs  . . . good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over  . . . through the giving of men poured into our lap. (Luke 6:38)
When we are not faithful in our giving, we are doing three things:
1.      We are disobeying God’s Word to tithe,
2.      We are shutting off our own blessings, and
3.      We are placing our pastors on a poverty level of income in which we, ourselves, would not be willing to exist.
Now consider the fourth question above. God will not be mocked. His Word is quick and sharp and powerful: You can give freely and gain even more OR you can withhold unduly and come to poverty. (Proverbs 11:24)
God’s way may not always seem fair to us but it is always just. He has set down His way to bless us, either to be on the receiving end at times or the giving end at times, but to tithe at all times so that he can distribute the blessings!
“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse . . . and test me in this says the Lord Almighty.” (Malachi 3:10)

Note of interest:
Statistics indicate that 33% of the world’s population is professing Christians.
These professing Christians control 62% of the world’s resources.
Statistics further show they give 1½% of this wealth to secular charities, ½% as personal gifts, 1% to God, and consume the other 97% on their own lusts.
What a tragedy these professing Christians have never learned God’s law of return?
