My Thoughts on Scripture ~ 1

by Danna Shirley

"Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, TO ALL GOD'S HOLY PEOPLE IN CHRIST JESUS at [fill in your City and State] ...Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ......And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God." (Philippians 1:1-2 and 9-11)
This may have been written centuries ago but it was also directed to us centuries later. Paul prayed for US, that our love and knowledge and depth of insight would abound so that we could live blameless and righteous until we go home to be with Jesus. What an awesome prayer!

"Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: 'May those who love you be secure.'" (Psalm 122:6)
God's chosen people are the Jews. I'm thankful He grafted us into their vine. Our lives are entwined with theirs and so the USA is entwined with Israel. When the Bible tells us to Pray for the peace of Jerusalem, we are also praying for the peace of the United States.

"It is good to praise the Lord and make music to your name, O Most High, proclaiming Your love in the
morning and Your faithfulness at night." (Psalm 92:1-2)
Praising God morning and night are like bookends for our day. A great 24-hour day!

"Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God--this is your true and proper worship." (Romans 12:1)
Our living sacrifice might be just to have the courage to speak to a stranger and share the Good News of the Gospel. Or it might be to confront a person with what they don't want to hear. Or maybe it’s to give up something you want to hold on to. We all have to examine the sacrifice God calls us to because it’s always for our good and our obedience pleases Him.

"If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without fault, and it will be given to you." (James 1:5)
We all lack wisdom...probably in any and every area of our life--from what to eat to when to go to bed for a good night’s sleep. I fail in both of those areas for sure!
Looking for wisdom in other areas of importance: finances, relationships, decision making, prayer life and Bible reading, church attendance, tithing, etc. Some are personal, some are spiritual. Whenever we are at a loss, ask of God and He will give us answers for our good...generously.

"In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also." (John 14:2-3)
That reminds me of the house my sister lost in the CA wildfires (Oct 2017). It was impressive by some standards (middle-class), with extreme affluence by some standards (low income), but it was a shack by Heaven's standards, for God has prepared us a mansion. The Good News for us here on earth is that we already have Him in our heart, living/abiding with us....AND He will also come and take us home to live with Him. It's a win-win situation. Hallelujah!

"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up." (Deuteronomy 6:5-7)
Loving the Lord with all our heart, soul, and strength is something to be pursued for sure but impressing them on our children is hard because they have a mind of their own. I remember trying to have devotions with my children when they were old enough to sit still and listen. What a challenge. I wish I had started when they were born so they could have grown up from the cradle but I didn't become a Christian until they were 10 and 4.
The second part of that scripture, is to just sit at home and talk with them in a normal setting. That's where our opportunity lies. Just in normal day-to-day settings with family. Look for those precious moments to declare God's love.

"From Him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work." (Ephesians 4:16)
I know we are not saved by works, but when saved, there is work to be done for the Kingdom...six days of work and we rest on the seventh. We're all gifted by God in the area He wishes us to work; that's why He gave each of us our own particular gift. And using our gift we each do our part to support, grow, and build up the Body in love. When someone isn't using their gift, it leaves a big gap in the work to be done. I don't do children's ministry but I do office work. I send out an email every week with announcements of what is going on at my church, what is needed, etc. If I volunteered for children's ministry I would probably scare the kids to death. I know they would scare me to death!

"So will My word be which goes forth from My mouth; It will not return to Me empty, without accomplishing what I desire, And without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it." (Isaiah 55:11 NAS)
As a new believer, someone told me I should "pray the Word" over situations because God's Word would be the perfect prayer, straight from His mouth to His ear. His Words would go forth and accomplish what He desires and there would be great success over the matter. That's when I began to personalize scripture and insert specific names into it. Try it!

"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." (Acts 1:8)
For us today that means being a witness to our family/friends, our neighborhood/state, our country/USA, and to the mission field. But there is no fear for the Holy Spirit will open doors and give us the words to speak.

"I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy." (Philippians 1:3-4)
Imagine praying with joy. How wonderful and excellent to have such a relationship with someone that nothing is remembered but joy. Would that we all could have such relationships with family and friends and neighbors. Cultivate and covet joy in all our surroundings.

"And may the Lord make you increase and abound in love to one another and to all, just as we do to you, so that He may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all His saints." (1 Thessalonians 3:12-13)
Increase and abound in love; establish our heart blameless...That's a tall order when we have to live in this world and deal with those who walk into our lives. We can only take care of our heart, establish love in our heart, examine our heart that we're not holding anything against anyone so that we're blameless before God, and let Him take care of the rest. Still, a pretty tall order!

"Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you--unless, of course, you fail the test?" (2 Corinthians 13:5)
We are to test our own selves so that our faith will be proven. Does our life match our walk, our words, our deeds? The challenge is, are we walking in the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22). With Christ Jesus IN us we have a better chance to pass the test. But then again, there is only One Who is perfect...Christ Jesus our Lord!

O Lord,
"You know my sitting down and my rising up..." (Psalm 139:2)
"You number my wanderings; put my tears into Your bottle..." (Psalm 56:8)
"The very hairs on [my] head are all numbered." (Matthew 10:30)
"How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God..." (Psalm 139:17)
"I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made..." (Psalm 139:14)
Amen...

"This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all...But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin...If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." (1 John 1:5, 7, 9)
What a declaration and hope from God that we can walk in the Light of Jesus Christ and His blood cleanses us from all our sins. First step is to recognize that we are sinners. He wants us to realize in our heart (in thought, word, or deed) that we've missed the mark and we need to come to Him for cleansing and forgiveness. Staying in the darkness of our sin draws us back and away from our Savior. As we walk in the Light of His Love and forgiveness we have fellowship with Him and with each other; clean hands and a pure heart...there's nothing like it! HALLELUJAH!

"...that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, be[...] rooted and grounded in love..." (Ephesians 3:16-17)
Paul's prayer for the Ephesians and now FOR US down through the centuries is that we also be strengthened in our inner man (resolve, character, integrity, etc.), that Christ may dwell in our heart (allowing the Holy Spirit to transform us into the image of Christ), that we be rooted and grounded in love (not tossed to and fro by our emotions). Good prayer Paul... thank you!

The Lord is speaking to Moses, "My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest." (Exodus 33:14)
What a promise to Moses and to us. We are never alone. We never face each day or each night alone. Besides the presence of the Lord within and without, His blessed rest and peace surrounds us. Lay your head back, shut your eyes, breathe deeply, and pray wherever God leads you.

"And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord's people." (Ephesians 6:18)
Praying in the Spirit (tongues) is the perfect prayer...from the Spirit in you to God Almighty...bypassing your intellect and input. When I can't even form the words in my own mind what to pray, I pray in the Spirit knowing it is the exact way to reach God's ears; knowing I can leave it with Him and 'It is finished.'

"Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you." (1 Peter 5:6-7)
To humble is to make low (our part); exalt is to raise up (God's part). I can see how our pride might get in the way of God's care for us because we tend to want to handle things ourselves. What we hang onto, God does not take away; surrendering our burdens into God's hands (casting care) is how we let go and let God.

Do "not giv[e] up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another--and all the more as you see the Day approaching." (Hebrews 10:25 NIV)
I always think of this scripture if I don't want to get dressed and go to church. And if I don't, then I hear how great it was and I missed something wonderful. But the scripture also says we need to encourage one another so going means I can give an encouraging word and I can receive an encouraging word. It's a win-win experience.

"How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, "Your God reigns!" (Isaiah 52:7)
Every time we share the good news of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, our beautiful feet have taken us there. It is not our job to "save" anyone. It is our job to share Jesus Christ and then He builds on the seed we've planted. Someone else may water it but God reigns over it. Hallelujah.

“Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world." (1 John 4:1)
What amazes me is that if there were false prophets in the disciple's day, how much more are there false prophets in our day. That's why its so important that we let the Spirit of God within us "test the spirits" around us. Why? Because deception is a key tool of the enemy. We can trust God to give us fair warning because "we have the mind of Christ." (2 Corinthians 2:16)

"So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." (Isaiah 41:10) What a wonderful promise. God takes us from fear and dismay to strength, help, and holding His hand. In whatever situation we may find ourselves, He wants us to move from the first half of this scripture into the last. God wants us to TRUST that He will hold our hand.

FOUR KEYS TO HEARING GOD’S VOICE
1.      Stillness (quiet yourself down)
2.      Vision (fix your eyes on Jesus)
3.      Spontaneity (tune in to God’s voice)
4.      Journal (write it down; two-way journaling)

I was meditating in prayer and asked God this: Please reassure me of Your presence and increase my faith. He gave me a vision of being laid down in a warm recliner with a comforter all bunched up around the edges like I was in a bassinet. I did not lay myself down but I was being laid down. It happened three times. Then God closed a shield over me like I was in a warm cocoon. I saw myself as a child in the womb surrounded by the fluid of life and the love of God. Wow, was that special. We are His children and He is our most loving Father. God will show us great and mighty things of which we know not. (Jeremiah 33:3) Just ask Him and He will give it to you.

Find the hole in the whole of your life and fill it. Eventually you will look outward instead of inward. Everything is in God's timing. You'll know it when it happens and you'll refocus your eyes. Just be aware and take heart...it will happen!

Regrets! I would not dwell on what you should or should not have done. Nothing will change that and all you'll do is create more heartache. Look to what you can do now. Create memories and live in that moment, not in the past. Let your light shine before people so they can see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.

Life is just day-to-day. Ups and downs. Sleep and awake. Joy and sorrow. Sunshine and rain (Matthew 5:45).
Peaks and valleys. Smooth sailing and then a storm and the only one Who calms the storm is Jesus saying, "Peace, be still" and great peace comes (Mark 4:35-41).

My Thoughts on Scripture ~ 2

by Danna Shirley

"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves received from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ." (2 Corinthians 1:3-5)
Breaking it down it looks like this:
God...comforts us...so that we can comfort [others] ...with the [same] comfort we received from God.
This was one of the first scriptures I learned and how I finally understood it. A friend had had an abortion and she wanted me to work with her in a pro-life ministry. The first girl we talked to kept saying, "But you don't understand; you don't know what I'm going through." No, I couldn't relate, but my friend could. She could comfort this girl with the same comfort she had received from God when she had her abortion.
I wish we didn't have to go through our experiences but because we have, we can comfort others as God has comforted us. God puts people in our path to minister His peace and comfort. As we tune in to the Holy Spirit, He brings us many fish. "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will send you out to fish for people." (Matthew 4:19)
Now, when I experience something profound, I realize somewhere down the line God will bring me someone in the same situation who I am to comfort. I look forward to that day knowing nothing is wasted with God.

"The law [Word/scripture] of the Lord is perfect [complete, sound], converting the soul [mind, will, emotions];
The testimony of the Lord is sure [confirmed], making wise the simple [open-minded];
The statutes of the Lord are right [straight]rejoicing the heart [inner man];
The commandment of the Lord is pure [clean], enlightening the eyes;
The fear of the Lord is clean [pure], enduring forever [perpetuity];
The judgments of the Lord are true [firm, faithful, truth] and righteous [just] altogether.
More to be desired [take pleasure in] are they than gold,
Yea, than much fine gold [refined];
Sweeter also than honey [flowing] and the honeycomb." (Psalm 19:7-10)

"Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." (2 Timothy 2:15 KJV)
Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. (2 Timothy 2:15 (NKJV)
Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. (2 Timothy 2:15 NIV)
I look at this verse as a directive to study, be diligent, and do our best, to correctly handle the word of God and not be ashamed to share it. But to share it we have to know it. That's where study comes in and as we study, we're not ashamed when we can't answer a question but have to say, "I don't know but I'll find out and get back with you." God speaks to us through His Word; we just have to stop and listen.

"Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need." (Hebrews 4:16)
Some people are afraid to come boldly to God...like He is an abusive heavenly Father. I guess they base that on an abusive earthly father but that is so untrue. God has nothing but our good in mind, even when we don't think so. If we look at certain situations and imagine the worst-case scenario... the "what if" this or that had happened...and then realize the actual outcome was better, safer, easier, protected, etc., we can see God's hand at work in our life for good and not for harm.
The next step is to obtain His mercy [compassion] find grace [kindness] to help in our time of need. God loves us so much and doesn't want us to suffer. However, in our suffering we can grow stronger, mature spiritually, trust God more, our faith is increased, etc. If we look back from where we are to where we've come from, the encouragement and inspiration are a hundred fold in return. The key is to allow God to do the work in us that He wants to do. We can get really stubborn and resistant, which holds us back.
I've always been the slow learner, the tortoise not the hare, but I've learned a few things over my many years as a Christian. Everyone goes at their own pace and for me, it was two steps forward, one back, etc. but always, always, always "keep your hand in the hand of the Man who stilled the waters." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1iAaKHd7z8

Today is September 11, 2017 (16th anniversary)...on top of two hurricanes--Harvey (TX) and Irma (FL).
I woke up thinking of all of these disasters. Turned on the TV to watch the report and pictures of what's left in FL. When our thoughts gravitate in one direction, God brings us back to His Word. He brought this scripture to my mind this morning...
"Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." (Philippians 4:11-13 NKJV)
After fourteen years of being a widow, my response to whoever may ask is--"I'm content with my life. Yes, of course, I would rather have the love of my life back, but I have reached beyond grief and have graduated to contentment. But it did take time..."
For the hurricane victims: Yes, they will experience grief as if there has been a death in the family, but all material things can be replaced. Not so with the lives of loved ones. My advice is to find strength through Christ, find contentment in every situation, pick up the pieces, and rebuild. Easy to say, hard to do, BUT what's the alternative?

My pastor's sermon today (Sep 17th) wasn't really a sermon. It was a sharing of a conference he had attended over the weekend. He was very moved while telling us about it. I believe he said 125 pastors were there and they spent the first 90 minutes praying, praying, praying...
One Chinese pastor's testimony was that he had been on death row for ten years. He would convert the whole prison and they would get mad at him and send him to a worse prison. Finally, they sent him to clean the toilets (buckets really) at a prostitute prison and he still converted more to believe. Finally, Paul Yonggi Cho (pastor of the largest A/G church in the world--South Korea--over one million members) went to the United Nations to get him released and brought to America. He can never go back to China and his wife and children can never leave to be with him unless he renounces Christ, which he will not do.
My pastor's point was that here was a man on death row for ten years, cleaning toilets with his hands and he was stressing over the sound system or the leaky roof, etc. at our church. He said it really put things into perspective for him...for me, too!

"BELIEVE me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me; or at least BELIEVE on the evidence of the works themselves. Very truly I tell you, whoever BELIEVES in Me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even GREATER things than these, because I am going to the Father." (John 14:11-12)
I've always loved the trust that Jesus has in us to do greater things than He has done. Trusting us to get it right, do it right, stretch ourselves out of our comfort zone and BELIEVE, step out in faith and JUST DO IT!

"While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.” Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins." (Mark 26:26-28 NIV)
Communion is so very special. Jesus tells us to do this in remembrance of Him...what He did on the cross for us...His body broken, His blood poured out. He states this before it even happened, knowing He would be beaten and nailed to a cross. All He asks is that we remember what He did by taking communion. My church does it once a month. I believe that Catholics take it every week, but it doesn't have to be in church done by a priest or a pastor. This do in remembrance of Me [Jesus] at any time we wish to focus our hearts and minds on what He did for us.

"The Lord says: 'These people come near to Me with their mouth and honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me. Their worship of Me is based on merely human rules they have been taught.'" (Isaiah 29:13)
I have sometimes found myself singing the songs but not really worshiping the Lord. My mind/heart is thinking about other things. God definitely knows our heart and as He said in Isaiah, mine is far from Him...sad to admit. When I find myself drifting, drifting, drifting, I bring myself back into the moment, really listen to the words I am singing, shut out everything and everyone around me, and set my mind/heart on Him above. My arms float up in worship and surrender and it is just me and Jesus. Blessed be the Name of the Lord.

“And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord. And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake: And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire A STILL SMALL VOICE.” (1 Kings 19:11-12 KJV)
I've told this story many, many times but it is the most significant testimony I have of hearing God's still small voice. I was praying in my shower about whether I should move to TN or stay in the house Ron and I had built in MS where I had a job, my church, my friends, my memories. The water was coming down vertically and I was just praying casually, "Well, Lord, what should I do?" not thinking that God would really mess with my life. Then I felt a physical presence move across me horizontally and God said to my spirit, "You are released!" That was His still small voice. The voice we have to tune into when we allow ourselves to quiet down our own spirit and just listen, even pray, "Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening" (1 Sam 3:10) and then wait. It's an awesome feeling and privilege to know God is personally looking after us and speaking to our heart.

"We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God, who are called according to His purpose." (Romans 8:28)
The first time I heard someone refer to this scripture, he said, "Well, Romans 8:28 is still in the book." I can't remember what he was going through but he was hanging his hat on this verse. Trusting God to work everything together for good takes a lot of faith. The second half takes a lot of faith, too. Am I really called according to His purpose? Yes! If you are a Christian, you are a called one. He will reveal His purpose in due time.

"Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." (Philippians 1:6)
The 'good work' God began in me was on a Sunday, May 18, 1980. My walk has been slow but steady and even though I've said I'm more like the tortoise than the hare, I do trust God to carry my spiritual life and maturity on to completion until the day I go home to be with Jesus. Amen!

"I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." (Jeremiah 29:11)
This verse is shared so often in all kinds of situations, especially on greeting cards...birthday, anniversary, thinking of you, graduation, even sympathy. Future plans, we all face them, and it's wonderful to know God is in charge of all our hopes and all our future.

"For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man...And He will send His angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather His elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other." (Matthew 24:27 and 31)
Hallelujah! Can't you just see it happening. I would love to be raptured today. We all have to be ready to meet Him in the sky every day! No one knows the day or the hour...we should just live our lives and be ready at all times and in all seasons.

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and LEARN FROM ME, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light." (Matthew 11:28-30)
You know, you can read the same scripture for years and then all of a sudden it clicks. I've always looked at 'find rest for your soul' and that is so true; and He makes our 'burdens light' and that is so true...BUT just now it clicked on, LEARN FROM ME! How do we learn something? We study it, we meditate on it, we go from a Kindergarten level to a PhD. That's what our Christian walk is like...education...and we never reach graduation until we graduate to heaven. Hallelujah!

I woke up to the Las Vegas shooting this morning (Oct 2, 2017)...Oh, Lord, help us, PLEASE! I have no words, when we not only have to worry about terrorists but our very own citizens. Satan is alive and well and doing a good job...
"The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have LIFE, and that they may have it more abundantly." (John 10:10)
Satan's job description: steal hope, peace, and joy; kill body, mind, and spirit; destroy finances, relationships, and future.
Christ's job description: GIVE LIFE and LIFE MORE ABUNDANTLY, TO THE FULL UNTIL IT OVERFLOWS, ABOVE AND BEYOND ALL THAT WE COULD EVER ASK OR HOPE OR THINK! I am a follower of Jesus Christ and I believe in His job description.

"For I am not ashamed of the Gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. For in the Gospel the righteousness of God is revealed--a righteousness that is by faith from the first to last, just as it is written: 'The righteous will live by faith.'" (Romans 1:16-17)
I remember those days when I was NOT ashamed but was also not very bold to speak out for Christ, especially if I knew the person and would be around them on a regular basis. However, if it was a stranger and I knew I would never see them again, I was pretty bold. I remember getting on an elevator once and could tell the woman was in pain. I was prompted to pray for her and then we went our separate ways.
Now, if prompted by the Holy Spirit, I have reached that place to be obedient without inhibitions. The key words to keep in mind are "by the Holy Spirit." It's such a good feeling knowing you're being used by God to help someone else.

"May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us--yes, establish the work of our hands." (Psalm 90:17)
It is a blessing to ask God to bless the work of our hands no matter what our hands find to do; whether quilting or writing or finding peace and comfort in cuddling with our pets, loving on our grandchildren, or putting our hands together in prayer. Whatever we find to do, we should do it with our whole heart, as unto the Lord (Colossians 3:23).

"Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer. From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the Rock that is higher than I." (Psalm 61:1-2)
His Word sustains us knowing when we CRY out to Him [with our whole heart, mind, soul, and strength], He leads us higher and higher into those realms of peace, trust, faith, mercy, hope, encouragement; into every area that we can ever think or imagine to fulfill the calling Jesus [the Rock] calls us into. We ask Him to hear our CRY...now our part is to tune our spirit to listen to His still, small voice.

"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers." (Galatians 6:9-10)

Do not become weary in doing good. That convicts me at this moment because I was facing a situation of being very tired of 'doing good' and not receiving the proper 'thank you' for my efforts...or so I thought. Pride goeth before a fall. But then the scripture says 'do good' anyway. Okay, Lord, I hear You!

"And may you have the power to understand, as all God's people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep His love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God." (Ephesians 3:18-19 NLT)
Power to understand? Although we live through events that we can't understand, that leave us numb and almost catatonic, eventually we don't look down and around us but we have to look UP to see and realize that His love is wide and long and high and deep.

October 9, 2017
I watched the weather channel most of the day to keep informed of the fires in CA. My sister, Paula, lost her house in Napa as well as three neighbors down her driveway. Late in the evening an earthquake hit south of San Francisco...a 4.1 on the Richter scale. What is happening to our country...
Aug 30  Hurricane Harvey (Houston)
Sep 11   Hurricane Irma (Miami)
Sep 20   Hurricane Maria (Puerto Rico)
Oct 1     Las Vegas mass murder tragedy
Oct 7     Hurricane Nate (Biloxi)
Oct 9     Wildfires in California and across the Western states
Oct 9     Earthquake in San Jose, California (4.1)
I thought of this scripture...
"For we know that all creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time." (Romans 8:22)
Lord, deliver us from these disasters...or is this our punishment for all the evil we've allowed in this country...legal abortions, gay marriages, riots, disrespecting our flag, calling evil good and good evil. I cry, Lord, have mercy on us.

Fire still raging (Oct 10, 2017)...
"For we walk by faith, not by sight." (2 Corinthians 5:7)
When there's nothing else to do in your life, just keep walking, straight ahead, eyes on Jesus, not looking to the right or to the left, but looking up where your help comes from.

Fire still raging (Oct 13, 2017)...
Well, I spent the whole day yesterday again on the Weather Channel. I did take a break for a few hours because I just couldn't watch anymore. My chest was so heavy with such a sinking feeling. Last I heard there were 31 dead and hundreds missing...and it's still not contained. Now I must take the advice I've been giving:
"TRUST in Him at all times, you people; pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. Selah." (Psalm 62:8)   "You will keep him in perfect PEACE, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You." (Isaiah 26:3)

Aftermath at my sister, Paula's, house Oct 14, 2017: "Absolutely nothing salvageable. The papers in the safe are ashes. Coins are black. Nana's rings not recognizable. Very bad. They are saying this is the worst fire in CA history."
My daily devotion from "Jesus Calling" on Oct 14th:

"When suffering strikes, remember that I am sovereign and that I can bring good out of everything. Do not try to run from pain or hide from problems. Instead, accept adversity in My Name, offering it up to Me for My purposes. Thus your suffering gains meaning and draws you closer to Me. Joy emerges from the ashes of adversity through your trust and thankfulness."

My Thoughts on Scripture ~ 3

Danna Shirley

One of the fruit of the Spirit is peace but it has to be practiced and developed by use...
1) cast down imaginations
2) bring every thought captive
3) obey Christ
4) pray the Word of God over yourself
5) Lord bless and protect me; be gracious to me, show me Your favor, and give me Your peace. (Numbers 6:24-26)
6) I am bold and strong and I banish fear and doubt, for the Lord my God is with me wherever I go. (Joshua 1:9)
7) Lord, keep me in perfect peace because I trust in You and my thoughts turn to You often. (Isaiah 26:3)
8) Give me Your peace so my heart won't be troubled and I won't be afraid. (John 14:27)
9) Lord, You are my peace. (Ephesians 2:14)
10) God, let Your peace rule in my heart. (Colossians 3:15)
11) Lord, I cast all my care on You because You care for me. (1 Peter 5:7)

"Jesus said, If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin [missing the true end and scope of our lives, which is God, with the emphasis on guilt]; but now that you claim you can see [Jesus and yet still don't believe], your guilt remains." (John 9:41)

"Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world."  (James 1:27)
Wow, how timely was this discovery? This is not written TO orphans and widows but to any believer who wants to be accepted by God "as pure and faultless"...of course we're all accepted by God but this is His motivation for us to reach out in a "helps" ministry.

"For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed--a righteousness that is by faith from the first to last, just as it is written: 'The righteous will live by faith.'" (Romans 1:17)
The righteous will live by faith. That says it all. Our whole life is lived by faith...that we will rise every day and take our next breath, that our heart will beat, that all systems are go. How precious are we to God...

"To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat down with My Father on His throne." (Revelation 3:21 NIV)
That's what God wants for us...to have victory over all our circumstances. Oh, we'll go through our peak and pit experiences but God is always there. He never leaves us or forsakes us. There is a learning and growing experience in everything we do and everything that comes our way. We either receive a blessing or we are the blessing to someone else.

"When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, 'I am the Light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.'" (John 8:12 NIV)
I like that...I will never walk in darkness ... [spiritually]. When Jesus' light shines in us, we also give off a light in a dark world. Imagine when God takes us Christians in the rapture...what will the world look like then? That's why witnessing is so important and why God gave us His great commission.
"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end off the age." (Matthew 28:19-20)

THE ECLIPSE ~ AUGUST 21, 2017...
"The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands." (Psalm 19:1)
"And they were calling to one another: 'Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of His glory.'" (Isaiah 6:3; Psalm 72:19)
"Be still and know that I am God." (Psalm 46:10)

Can you imagine how much we were impressed and ga-ga over the eclipse from down here; how much more are they in heaven who look down from up there?

"And He said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong." (2 Cor 12:9-10)
Mostly my thoughts go from "God's grace is sufficient for me," to "for when I am weak, then He is strong." I don't much like taking pleasure in my infirmities, but then again, I'm no Apostle Paul!

"Glory in His holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice." (1 Chronicles 16:10)
Oh, so true! I think the key word is heart. Its that thing again of getting the Word from head knowledge down into having heart knowledge. I've heard of people who can quote the Bible forwards and backwards and have been involved in seeking every religion you can think of...even a few never heard of. Quoting the Bible doesn't make you a Christian. It's all in your heart...yours and God's.

"But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8 NIV)
I'm glad and sad that He did. Glad for me and my eternity; sad that my sin put Him on the cross and that He had to die a horrible death for me. The scary part is that I would be in hell if not for accepting Jesus as my Savior. It's an awesome thought and unfathomable. Just believe and receive and so many people won't...they fight and fight against Him and want to stay right where they are...drowning and dying in sin...but while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Thank You, Lord!

"A person's wisdom yields patience; it is to one's glory to overlook an offense." (Proverbs 19:11 NIV)
Wow, that's a mouthful. Breaking it down word by word it looks like this: Patience = overlook (forgive) = wisdom = glory! Simple? Ha, that's probably one of the hardest things to ever accomplish in this life. But nothing is impossible with God. That's the key..."with God."

"He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds." (Psalm 147:3 NIV)
Healing is not just for the Physical (body) but
Mental (mind, right thinking)
Spiritual (you and God drawing closer)
Emotional (grieving, sorrow, sadness)
Financial (frugal, being a good steward)
Relational (spouse, children, friends, family, co-workers);
Any and all circumstances/situations in which we may find ourselves.
He heals our broken heart and binds up our wounds.

"For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." (Ephesians 2:10)
A sermon I heard years ago said we should all pray about choosing a "life verse." This one has always been on my heart because when we have Christ’s Spirit in us, we also have His love, grace, mercy, and Spirit of giving. Therefore, when we see a need, we have Christ’s desire to fulfill it. He opens our blind eyes to see that need and shows us the “GOOD” we can do to fulfill it. Align with God and release Him into every situation. God puts His stamp on our purpose and our purpose is diminished into His purpose.

"For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise You for I am fearfully and wonderfully mademarvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well. My frame was not hidden from You, when I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them. How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand; when I awake, I am still with You." (Psalm 139:13-18)
All these words describing how much God put into the making of us. How could anyone abort such a beautiful creation of God.

"Jesus said to him, 'I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.'" (John 14:6)
There is really no verbal witnessing that will probably reach unbelievers except to just live our lives out in front of them and pray/send the Holy Spirit to break through their unbelief and deceptive ideas.

"Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night. he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper." (Psalm 1:1-3)
Wow, what an awesome promise...but every promise in the scriptures has a condition... DELIGHT yourself in the law [scriptures] and MEDITATE on them day and night...THEN you will be FRUITFUL and PROSPER. Meditate means to think deeply or focus one's mind; to open yourself up to hear from the Holy Spirit...that's your part! Hunger to hear God’s Words. Tears are the language of the heart.

"But Simon Peter answered Him, 'Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Also we have come to believe and know that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.'" (John 6:68-69)
I love this scripture because it confirms that we are to remain right in the middle of Christ, surrounded by His love and grace and mercy. Why? Because we are always in three positions of life...1) Either we've just been through something; 2) or we are in the middle of something; 3) or we are going into something! No matter where we are or what we are experiencing... where else can we go but to the Lord? Jesus has the words of eternal life and we believe and know that He is the Christ, the Son of the living God! Hallelujah!

Jesus tells me:
Reach out
Step out
Minister to others
Be bold
Satan Tells me:
Retreat
Stand still
Be silent
Hold back

Ask God for a hunger to press in to Him—hear Him quickly—obey Him quickly. Seek God’s face (His presence) as well as His hand (His blessings). Some find God seeking His face first, then His hand; some find God seeking His hand first, then His face. Salvation encompasses His face and His hand. Greek word for salvation/saved is all inclusive and means:
(5442Phullaso: to keep by way of protection
(4991Soteria: rescue or safety, health, salvation, deliverance, saving, preservation
(1295Dia-sozo: to save thoroughly, heal, make perfectly whole, preserve, cure
(4982) Sozo: to save, deliver, protect, make whole, heal, be whole, preserve, be well
Press in to signs and wonders that glorify God…salvation, healing, deliverance, restoration

“God, how do You see miracles of healing and deliverance? How important are miracles to You?”
I had a vision of a wave of the sea moving across humanity; rocks sticking up here and there as dry ground, not allowing the water to flow over them. Those in the water are refreshed, swimming, receiving. They are swimming in one direction, not out to sea or toward shore but across the shoreline—passing the rocks and dry ground. Those in dry places are trying to pull people out of the water but they refuse; they want to keep swimming to their destination. Those in dry places don’t want to get wet; they don’t want to be immersed in this sea. There is no destination in this water—just a continual moving toward a never-ending goal, always being in God's will.

Stir myself up…or I’ll sink to the bottom.
Shift from religious routine to knowing Him intimately.
Make my heart fertile ground; plant seeds; renew my mind.
God longs to encounter me and each encounter is different.
Be relentlessly pursuing God; heaven will come to earth.
Read Psalm 91 every day.
Step into the secret place of His glory; there’ll be no perception of time.
Rest in Him, allow Him to commune with me.
Let Him overtake me so I can move into a deeper level.

"May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit." (Romans 15:13)

Boy, I like those words...HOPE, JOY, PEACE, TRUST, POWER! God sure knows how to encourage us in just one sentence and it all stems, initiates, exists from and through Him...
Hope for the future...
Joy bursting within...
Peace in the midst...
Trust in the present...
Power to survive!
Thank You, God, for Your hand upon our lives.
