THEY SAY . . .

by Danna Shirley
The following short story was submitted in the Creative Writing Class at Bartlett Senior Center, Bartlett, TN. The assignment was to use the random words below (or any form thereof) and write something interesting.

cloudless ~ sneeze ~   stormy ~ conductor ~ eternity ~ adventurous ~ superstition

Jed stuck his nose outta the side window of the engine car, looked up at the cloudless sky, and sneezed.  “Storm’s a comin!” he said matter-of-factly, as he spit a mouthful of tobacco juice and then turned and watched Jim Roy stoke the furnace.  “I kin feel it in me bones.”
Jim Roy glanced into the sky and agreed.  “Stormy weather ain’t nothin’ to sneeze at,” he said smiling at his own joke, knowin’ Jed would never get it.  He lifted another shovel full
of coal and continued, “’specially goin’ through these here hills.”
Jed had been the conductor on this stretch of track for thirty years.  He knew what the weather did during every season and over every mile all the way.  The stretch he hated most was goin’ through the foothills.  He didn’t believe the superstition he’d heard of people leavin’ the train and ne’er bein’ heard from agin BUT it were better to believe it and stay on the train than not and take yer chances.
“They say,” Jed continued, as if Jim Roy hadn’t heard him tell this story a hundred times, “that the howl a the wind through the canyon sounds like a banshee.  They say it drives some people, people that ain’t strong a mind, plum outta theirs.”
“Who’s ‘they’?” Jim Roy asked, as he did every time Jed began the tale.  He never gotta answer.
“People been known to go missin’ right off’en the train,” he ignored Jim Roy’s familiar question, “and they ain’t never seen nor heard from agin, and that’s a fact!”
Jim Roy was tired a hearin’ Jed’s tall tales.  He decided he would do somethin’ ’bout it this time.  When the train slowed down to go ’round Coyote Pass and the howlin’ wind let loose, Jim Roy stepped off the train and into eternity—it was his last adventurous step!

Josephine loved the open road just to see where God would take her. She was forever getting mixed up in local affairs on her many vacations--bird watching, musical concerts, clothes buying, gift shopping, but this puppy thing took the cake. She saw the pitiful little thing on the side of the road. He looked lost and hungry. When she reached down to give him a cookie, he ate right out of her hand. There would be a scandal with hubby for sure if she brought another stray home. Oh, well, he was just too pitiful and too perfect to leave behind and she knew how to fake a few tears“Come here, boy. Let’s put a big red bow on you and take you home to Papa.”  J

PROUD ROSES

Adventure ~ Tidbit ~ Melody ~ Every ~ Roses ~ Hungry ~ Proud

As I sat rocking on the veranda enjoying the first burst of spring, a little tidbit of a melody came to me.  It was the pleasant cadence of the trees waving hello to the sun, the flutter of the hummingbird’s wings, the bees buzzing around the blossom’s nectar, the birds singing and making nests for their expected young, and of course the creak of my own movement as I swayed back and forth in my shady hiding place.  Every reverberation of nature made me hungry for adventure.  Spring had arrived and I was ready to take my place with it.

Mozzie is a daytime puppy. He’s up and ready to go for a walk at the crack of dawn. How ambitious one little puppy can be while bouncing down the side walk sniffing and curious over every little thing. To be honest, I can hardly catch my breath for trying to keep up with him.

We pass Mrs. Jerrell’s garden and he has to stop and smell the roses. We pass Mr. Gupp’s barber shop and he puts his little paws up to peek through the window. We pass the Donut Shop, or shall I say we try to pass the donut shop but the smells are too inviting. Other people pass and bend down to pet him but he’s loyal only to me.

After our daily walk we hit the couch for love and hugs and a good nap. We definitely respect each other’s naptime.

FORECAST ~ FUN!

summer ~ impossible ~ escape ~ forecast ~ quickly
seduction ~ sociable ~ responsibility ~ hope ~ mysterious ~ fun
The kids were out of school for the summer so my forecast for the day was fun, fun, fun. I had promised them excitement but our hope for a sociable day at the beach quickly escaped as the seduction of overcast skies made it impossible for us to stay. I had a responsibility to keep them safe so we packed up our towels, sunscreen, and umbrellas and were off to the zoo instead for a tour of those mysterious island creatures.

MEMORIES

As I looked at the sun streaming down on the kids swing set in the back yard and sipped my coffee, the memory of my Dad’s fishing boat parked out under the oak tree kept invading my thoughts.  A trip to the shore instead of the mountains seemed like a nice family vacation for this summer.  Besides, a dip in the ocean was an experience every child should have at least once in life.
Another sip of coffee brought a vision of Dad casting out into the lake for a fresh water catch.  He loved lake fishing but the fragrant aroma of the sea and going out in the deep blue was my passion.  I had done a substantial amount of sailing in my youth, so the thought of renting a boat and really doing it up right was on the list.

My desire to sail again did not permit me to go beyond my responsibility as a husband and father nor to put my family in jeopardy.  Suffice it to say that my conscience was still in place and working very well. We would go to the mountains again this year!

Tornado hitting a house

Nature can be kind and beautiful and kiss your skin with warmth, or it can be a horrifying tornado imparting a great education as to its awesome power.  No band aid can fix the destruction left by its path.  They say disasters come in threes.  Hopefully they are not contagious.
